Lini

Lani’s* pregnancy was a joyous time, but she soon faced severe health issues that took a toll on her mental and physical well-being. During her pregnancy,  she lost weight, had no appetite, and was constantly unwell.

As it was the first time Lani worked as a domestic worker in Hong Kong, she did not know where to seek medical assistance and she struggled to get the care she needed. Her worsening symptoms led to an emergency hospital visit.

Upon returning to work, Lani was pressured to sign documents she didn’t fully understand. Unaware that her employment contract had been terminated and her visa had expired, Lani found herself in a difficult situation.

With HELP’s assistance, Lani was able to achieve a settlement at the Labour Tribunal and a suspended sentence for her case. HELP also provided her with much-needed wellbeing support, helping her navigate this difficult and emotionally draining experience.

Through the partnership between HELP and Mercy HK, Lani and her baby could return safely home to Kenya, surrounded by the support of her family and community. “This is a fresh start, and I’m excited to begin this new chapter of my life,” Lani shared.
